Instagram’s New 4:5 Aspect Ratio: Complete Fix Guide 2025
If you've opened Instagram on your phone recently you may have noticed something's not quite right. The aspect ratio of the images has changed.
On desktop they’re still square – for now!
But on mobile devices, the default display format is now 4:5
Instagram has quietly shifted mobile preview ratios from the classic square (1:1) to portrait mode (4:5)
You used to have this:
But now you have this:
Which is not the effect you were going for
What Changed in Instagram’s Mobile Display?
In January 2025, Instagram rolled out a significant update to how images appear in mobile profile grids.
Instead of the traditional square format we've all built our feeds around, photos and Reels covers are now displayed in a 4:5 ratio on mobile devices – meaning they're taller than they are wide.
The ratio of Instagram posts was previously 1:1 – it is now 4:5 The resolution was 1080x1080 – it is now 1080x1350
Note that the desktop version still shows square previews, creating a disconnect between how your profile appears on different devices.
So how do you fix this problem?
But if you don’t like how this looks, you have a few options:
How to Fix Existing Posts
To fix this issue on posts without deleting and reuploading them. Instagram offers a basic fix – you can change the look of the preview.
Here’s how you do that:
-
Tap on the post you want to change
-
Tap the three dots above and select "Adjust preview."
-
Choose Fit or Fill.
-
And voila!
There are problems with this approach though:
→ There’s no blurred background option with Fit
→ You have no control over exactly how your image is cropped in Fill
→ You'll need to adjust each post individually, one at a time
If you’re not happy with this, you can always upload a new one – after resizing it perfectly to 4:5 ratio, so it just works naturally
